hen I found out that this is about doing 31 pictures yesterday, I was quite happy as I hadn't had any time to set up what I thought should be the final photo for this challenge before day 30.
It's the thirty-first day of this month, and as my last name means 'the first' in middle age German, I took the bite and put myself side by side with Picasso. And when 'self portrait' was being mentioned as the last resort in case nothing's around to shoot, things were perfectly clear. Well, Pablo had a photographer who did all the work and I had to trigger the shutter myself, let alone adjusting the cam in my all too small studio, but I'm pleased with the result and I hope you all get the message I painted into the air…

Thanks to Andromeda 5000 for providing the raw list. It didn't appear to be a challenge at first, but believe me, it is -- if you have a life, too, as the number of drop-outs will tell you. All the fine work of those I stroke through in this list is still available at the contest page and I sure hope you'll visit it.

ne more winterwonderland shot, or at least almost. When I went to the library with the kids, I had my shooting gear with me and this is what I got… Well, among other pictures which had less atmosphere however.
The sky cleared after sunset and allowed for a shot of the moon and the venus, plus the village's church, as a silhouette behind the trees. Snow is on short supply these days, but we've got plenty already and I won't complain if I can save on tires, logs and frozen ears for the rest of the winter.

hat seemed like a point in some far and uncertain day in the future became almost a fact today. With that melancholy which always frames closing projects, I took an indoor shot today, which sort of reflects the situation.
The door got open, but the way out is not entirely visible yet. I found this old thing a long time ago and I've always wanted to make a picture. Today it was a perfect synonym and to make things even more retro, I turned the picture into bw, too.

s if winter recognized that this challenge will be over soon we're stuck with fog which successfully keeps sun from shining. Not exactly the postcard atmosphere I would like to capture, but if it were about fancy colors and predictability, I should have chosen a different theme.
Do you remember the 2nd day of this challenge? Then I showed you a snow plow going uphill. It's day 28th and I've put the cam on the spot where it went. If you look closely, you can see a lot of my subjects in a single overview shot. The house anchoring the star trail shot on day 17 is the rightmost house in this shot, the one from day 21 neighboring it. Well, you can find even more subjects of previous shots, which makes this a nice interactive picture :)

s I had a meeting in Bregenz today, I stopped at that huge stalagmite which grows from the dripping waters of a well somewhere up the hill. There's a pipe running over the street and usually the water drops down into a gully. In winter, things are quite different.
As we had no sun and just some fog, I just shot the thing as a whole. Or as much as fitted my 20 mm lens -- but the top isn't that interesting at all, so I cropped it. There is a stream of water running inside this ice monster, forming quite nice mushroom-like ice blobs. On Thursday I'll pass this area once more and if lighting permits I hope to come up with some great finishing shots for this challenge… And yes, it is huge as you will see from scrolling down…

t was a tough day again, lots of mishaps, pretty much everything one doesn't need badly. It started with a jar dropping out of the shelf in the morning, smashing a plate. Well, a new plate. OK… later the workers returned to rebuild the cabinet in the kitchen (remember that leakage thing?). Well, they managed to cut into the new pipe and we were out of water again. Later they discovered a board being to short, they'll return tomorrow. Oh yeah. As we had no water on the first floor, we had to use the bathroom on the third floor. But after my daughter had used it, the water didn't stop flowing. Somehow the thing didn't stop and it took me half an hour to disassemble and reassemble that thing. In the meantime my son started to feel sick. It got worse in the afternoon, and later in the afternoon I started to feel sick as well. And then my daughter also got sick… I went to do today's shot, and … right …
I hoped for a nice startrail as the moon has gone, but of course the neighbors let their lights on all night. I took three pics, then the battery died. Well, it's recharging now and should be back soon. More frightening is the bright purple cast on the upper left corner of the picture. Looks as if there are bad amp distortions or whatever -- it's just in every frame, no matter where the cam points to, if shutter time exceeds one minute. So much for the long shutter shot…

hen it stopped snowing we got lots of rain and with today's sunshine, all the fluffy snow turned into hard and sometimes dangerous ice.
Temperatures are up once more which takes it's toll at all the nice snow. In the shadows it's cold enough to freeze the melting waters into clear ice -- watching your step when getting into the shadows to prevent to fall is a good idea these days. The various trails of straying animals got widened by the rain which looks nice when the low sun models the shadows.

oly smokes, this was that sort of day I didn't wish to happen during this challenge. It started with my wife being sick -- result: I had to do breakfast, lunch and dinner. Kids enjoy my kitchen work and so do I, but I had had some plans for the rebuilding of our kitchen and the neighboring bathroom as well…
If you think this sounds demanding, you're right. I finished with everything, except some changes in the wiring of the staircase and … right, there's something, but I can't get it. May I have on more cup of tea, please? Spent the evening with the kids on the couch, playing dice first, celebrating this week's movie day later. When I had them in bed, my daughter asked: 'What was your entry to the challenge today?' -- which helped a lot to remember :) Well -- I changed gear, put in the PK-13 distance ring and did a macro shot with the 50 mm lens, starring my cup of tea. Hope you enjoy a different part of my surroundings.
One month ago we celebrated x-mas, and it's one more week to go in this challenge. How time goes by…

ooking on things from above often reveals something you can't see at the object's level. As today won't get any sun I went for something which can't get much better with sunshine anyway.
This is a small creek right below a huge dam of the power company. As this valley runs to the West, there's no sun ever during the cold season. That made it a perfect candidate for what I had in mind. Secondly, there's a rather high bridge connecting my and the neighboring village which makes a perfect shooting point if one takes care not to be overrun by some truck.

pening the blinds this morning revealed my favorite winter sight -- lots of fresh snow and the sky mirroring in the shady blue areas of snow.
Days like this make winter look less grim to everybody. Snow reveals details even on trees in the far distance, the whole scene looks more detailed and the clear air makes things look closer than they are. And as temps are around the freezing point it's perfectly nice to spend some time outdoors. I think comparing days 19 and 20 with today gives a third and totally different impression from this area. Guess which I like best :)
